Candia, Giovanni Matteo de

Giovanni Matteo de Candia(1810-1883)-also known as Mario, Italian opera singer, the most celebrated tenor of his era. His decision to become a professional singer arose from accidental circumstances, after attending a military school. He was encouraged by composer Meyerbeer to become a singer and took singing lessons from two teachers. He made his debut in 1838 with immediate success. He then sang in Florence, London and Russia.
